Graham Crackers (2): Impossible

Title: Impossible
Author: Nancy Werin
Publisher: Penguin
Genre: Supernatural Romance
Synopsis: At seventeen Lucy discovers that for generations the women of her family have been cursed by an evil Elfin Knight. She must complete three seemingly impossible tasks or surrender herself to slavery and madness, like her mother before her, and she must do it before her daughter is born.

This novel is beautiful and engaging. I very much liked the concept of building the story around the folk balad of Scarborough Fair. It's a song that I have heard versions of, and as such it felt quite authentic that the Elfin Knight would bind it into a curse.

It's quite obvious from the start who the Eflin Knight is, so I'm not giving anything away by saying that the fact that Lucy doesn't fall for his charms is refershing and her relationship with Zach is well developed. It will have you downloading Simon and Garfunkle before you can say 'dodgy sweater vest'. It's a compelling story, well written and with just the right pace. Werin's writing is snappy, funny and deep; I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of Extraordinary. The charcaters are realistic and the sense of urgency lended by the impossible tasks will have you rushing to read the end.

My favourite quote comes from Zach: "We formed The Fellowship of the Ring when we should've all just gone on medication." (p. 193).
